About the South Area
The South Area of SWYM covers a large area of South Devon from Exmouth in the East through the Teign Valley and Dawlish to Torbay to the South. It is a beautiful coastal part of the region with Torbay known as the English Riviera. The beaches are famous with stretches of golden sands. There is a great variety in the communities in the area with some places being very rural and others being tourist hot spots.
The rural youth struggle to gather large enough groups to have youth groups whereas in the more heavily populated areas the youth have similar problems to urban youth without the facilities and provision. This means there are great opportunites for Christians and churches to work with the young people in the community.
The churches in the area are good at working together to form youth work projects that function to cover larger areas. There are also several other organisations at work in the area such as the LINX schools work in Torbay, the Teenbridge Project and YFC, and we enjoy a good working relationship. The schools are open and receptive and most of our workers help with and run lessons, do assemblies and run lunch clubs.
Sometimes it feels like being on holiday all the time living in this area, but the youth here have as many needs as in the cities.
